Rice farmers in key production zones of the Benin Republic are experiencing a significant productivity transformation following the adoption of climate-smart and regenerative agricultural practices. In sevfral intervention communites, yelds have more than doubled, while water efficiency and soil health have improved, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions from irrigated rice systems.

In the quiet farming community of Gulu, located in Rimin Gado Local Government Area of Kano State, life used to revolve around the long, exhausting trips villagers made to access basic grain milling services. For years, farmers like Hannatu Muhammad endured an 18-kilometre journey to Rimin Gado town just to mill grains like maize, millet, and wheat, an effort that often resulted in high post-harvest losses and income.

The Kano State Agropastoral Development Project (KSADP), funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Lives and Livelihood Funds (LLF), has taken a major step in strengthening value addition along the rice value chain. A total of 157 beneficiaries from all 44 Local Government Areas received empowerment packages designed to boost their incomes and improve food security.

At 32 years old, Bonny Kimmula Kagulire, a married father of two and a graduate of Computer Systems and Networks from Buganda Royal Institute, embodies the resilience of Uganda’s emerging rural agripreneurs. Before engaging with SAA interventions, Bonny worked as a teacher at Kasawo College, earning 33 USD (equivalent to UGX 120,000 at the time) a week from four lessons.
