Sikasso Hosts 13th Seed Fair: A Strategic Showcase for Agricultural Innovation

The 13th edition of the Seed Fair was held in Sikasso on May 9–10, 2025, under the leadership of the Seed Association of Mali (ASSEMA). Now a flagship annual event, the fair has become a key platform for dialogue among stakeholders in the seed sector includingproducers, cooperatives, researchers, public and private institutions, and technical and financial partners.

This year’s fair was organized under the theme “Institutionalizing Seed Procurement to Better Promote Seed Companies and Cooperatives in Mali.” It emphsized the need to sustainably structure the national seed market to create secure outlets for seed producers, enhance farmers’ access to quality seeds, and boost overall performance in the agricultural sector.

The opening ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Daniel Siméon Kelema, in the presence of Ms. Diarra Djénéba Sanogo, Minister for the Promotion of Women, Children, and the Family. In his speech, the Minister praised the efforts of all steakeholders  and underscored the importance of institutional procurement mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of seed cooperatives and reinforce Mali's food sovereignty.

Over the two-day event, discussions focused on support policies, financing opportunities, contractual frameworks in the seed sector, and technological innovations. Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), a key player in agricultural extension, showcased its ongoing support to farmers, particularly in strengthening capacity and improving seed production techniques.

The closing ceremony was led by the Governor of Sikasso Region who reiterated the commitment of local authorities to supporting initiatives aimed at modernizing agriculture and promoting rural entrepreneurship.

In summary, this 13th Seed Fair was a crucial platform for consultation, visibility, and forward-looking reflection, laying the ground for a more structured, inclusive and resilient agricultural future in Mali.
