Since October 2020, Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) has been implementing certain components of the Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) project, specifically the baseline survey and trainer training, in collaboration with the JICA expert team (NTC International Co., Ltd. & Kaihatsu Management Consulting, Inc.). With the successful completion of all commissioned activities, we would like to share a report along with reflections from our staff.

Reflections from the Baseline Survey Team (Ahmad and Adams)
The baseline survey was conducted using the CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interview) method. We designed a digital questionnaire using CAPI software, collected data through structured interviews, and managed the data on a cloud-based server for analysis.

With the cooperation of local extension agents, we conducted interviews with 120 farmers selected as survey respondents. The well-structured questionnaire allowed us to efficiently clean the data and share valuable insights with our expert team partners.

Through this survey, we recognized the significant advantages of the CAPI method. We believe that SAA’s monitoring and evaluation team should further adopt and enhance their proficiency in using CAPI software.”

Reflections from the Trainer Training Team (Ahmad, Ibrahim, and Jonathan)
“The trainer training program brought together 54 participants from 18 states across Nigeria and was conducted through two main components: lectures and market surveys.

During the initial lecture, master trainers from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development provided insights into the SHEP approach. The session was highly engaging, with participants actively asking questions and exchanging opinions, making it a very productive discussion.

On the second day, participants conducted field surveys at suburban markets, where they examined at least three types of crops. Based on their findings, they later ranked the priority crops and eventually developed business plans accordingly.

Through this training, participants gained valuable knowledge on market research methodologies, key indicators for crop selection, and business strategies to enhance income. As SAA, we have also reaffirmed that the essence of the SHEP approach lies in market research, strategic crop selection, and meticulous business planning."

With the completion of these activities, SAA remains committed to further strengthening market-oriented agricultural extension approaches to support smallholder farmers in achieving sustainable growth and improved livelihoods.
