【Activity】Empowering Farmers with Accessible Machinery

Mali
October.27.2025

Innovations in purchasing and using agricultural machinery are accelerating mechanization for small-scale farmers. In 2025, the Simplified Cooperative Union of Guessebougou, which is composed of 20 PHTCs , received technical assistance from SAA, and was provided with five tillers by a local NGO, G-Force. The two power tillers were allocated to the cooperatives of Kossoumalé (President N’Tji Traoré) and N’Tromabougou (President Madou Koné). The other three were entrusted to individual producers: Yacouba Diarra (Guessebougou cooperative), Madou Konaré (Drouako cooperative), and Sayon Diarra (Diarrabougou cooperative).

These are 8-horsepower, multifunctional tillers (for plowing, harrowing, and transport) with a market price of CFA 1,500,000 (about USD 2,500). The price of one tiller is normally out of reach for smallholder farmers in the region. However, an innovative repayment scheme made it possible for beneficiaries to purchase the machinery with a manageable initial payment and a flexible installment plan.

  • Cost and Payment: The total cost is CFA 1,500,000 (about USD 2,500). Beneficiaries make a down payment of CFA 250,000 (about USD 420) each, followed by installments over three years.
  • Union's Benefit: This structured approach generates a total income of CFA 7,500,000 (about USD 12,500) for the Union. That's a reliable income stream of CFA 2,500,000 (about USD 4,200) per year, which significantly strengthens the Union's finances and its capacity to invest in future initiatives.

SAA is not only providing the union with management knowledge on topics such as enterprise management and finance, but also offering technical training on how to operate, use, and perform basic maintenance on the tillers that were supplied to ensure they are properly managed.

The President, N’Tji Traoré says Before, it took us more than a week to prepare our fields. Today, in just two days, we can plow entire plots.”

The impact is profound: higher yields, lower production costs, better planning of farming seasons, and improved household food security. The power tillers are also rented out to other producers, generating collective income that is reinvested in maintenance and cooperative activities.

Mr. Yacouba Diarra confirms this shift that “I no longer need to rent oxen for plowing. I have been able to expand my fields, increase my yields, and pay my children’s school fees in advance.

This model shows that a well-structured investment, combined with collective management and technical support, can transform productivity and strengthen the economic autonomy of rural communities. It illustrates a virtuous dynamic: accessible mechanization, sustainable income for the Union, and tangible improvement in producers’ living conditions.
