【Intern Reflections】It’s About Time: Lessons from My International Conference Internship
This article is written by Mr. K., a university student from Japan who joined the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) Headquarters as an intern in 2025. In this piece, he reflects on his motivation, key experiences, and what he learned during his internship.
1. Reason for Applying for the Internship
My name is K, and I am a first-year student at ZEN University, a newly established online university in Japan that emphasizes liberal arts, digital innovation, and global engagement. I applied for this internship with the goal of broadening my perspective by working at an international conference. I also wanted to put my English skills and initiative to the test by engaging with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. While Africa is a vast continent with countless cultures, histories, and industries, my prior knowledge was limited to surface-level topics such as coffee and rooibos tea. Once selected as an intern, I was determined not to waste this valuable opportunity. To prepare for TICAD9 as a member of Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), I read books, conducted my own research, and made every possible effort in advance.
2. Memorable Experiences during the Internship
My main responsibility was providing public relations support for the SAA during TICAD9. I assisted staff by guiding visitors, managing the exhibition booth, and supporting social media communications.
Initially, I felt overwhelmed by the diversity of languages and cultures at the venue. During the orientation, an SAA staff member asked me a challenging question: “What can you do?” At that moment, I struggled to answer with confidence. This challenge, however, became the motivation I needed to act more proactively. I began approaching people passing by the booth and engaging them by offering materials.
Gradually, I became confident enough to converse with officials from Japan and Africa, staff from international organizations, and even French-speaking participants. I also effectively used gestures and visual aids to explain SAA’s activities. These efforts allowed me overcome me to successfully overcome both language and cultural barriers. Furthermore, when I faced complex situations while supporting African guests, I made it a point to immediately seek advice from SAA staff, quickly assess the circumstances, and respond efficiently. Through these experiences, I successfully developed practical negotiation and problem-solving skills.
The days of TICAD9 were incredibly busy, yet so fulfilling that I barely noticed my fatigue. The sense of accomplishment I felt a deep pride in having successfully contributed as a member of SAA. Above all, I left the internship knowing that I can surpass my own expectations and consistently act with confidence.

This internship taught me that in international settings, knowledge alone is insufficient—flexibility and teamwork are equally essential.
Observing global leaders in serious discussions and watching the dedication of the SAA staff made me think deeply about my future career path. Crucially, I gained the confidence that by taking that courageous first step, I can contribute even on the international stage.
Moving forward, I plan to intensify my studies at university, actively pursue opportunities to study abroad, and build a career that allows me to work in international business. I will leverage the flexibility and positive mindset I cultivated through this experience to continue tackling greater challenges without fear.
