In the village of Sitin, located within the Koloni-Boundio Postharvest & Trade Center (PHTC) zone in southern Mali, 56-year-old Moumoune Koné has earned recognition as a successful certified seed producer and respected agricultural entrepreneur. His journey illustrates how access to agricultural extension services, innovative farming practices, and market access can empower smallholder farmers to become thriving rural entrepreneurs.

Seven years ago, Moumoune joined the ISSD-Sahel initiative, implemented by the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), with support from the Embassy of the Netherlands, as a pilot seed producer. Through demonstration plots, practical training, and continuous coaching, he developed strong technical skills in certified maize seed production, crop management, and quality assurance.

Over time, the program opened doors to opportunities beyond his village. Through participation in seed fairs and agricultural exhibitions across Mali, Moumoune built links with research institutions, extension services, and seed companies. These partnerships improved his access to high-performing maize varieties such as Brico and Farako Tièba hybrid, while expanding his market opportunities for his seed business.

Today, Moumoune manages three hectares of certified maize seed production, achieving an average yield of about 3,300 kg/ha. Over the last two cropping seasons, he has harvested nearly 9,200 kg of certified seed, generating an estimated income of about USD 8,502,  while contributing to improved access to quality seed for farmers in the region. To strengthen his household’s resilience, he has diversified his production system beyond seed production. In addition to certified maize seed, he cultivates maize grain, cotton, groundnuts, yams, and sorghum.

Moumoune’s success extends beyond his own farm.  He now shares knowledge and practical experience with other farmers interested in seed multiplication, helping to strengthen local seed systems and encourage the wider adoption of improved varieties. His achievements have enhanced his household’s economic stability and earned him respect within the community.

Moumoune’s transformation from a participant in a demonstration plot program to a recognized seed entrepreneur demonstrates the power of practical training, effective extension systems, and strong market linkages. His experience continues to inspire farmers in Sitin and neighboring communities. By contributing to improved access to quality seeds, Moumoune is helping to strengthen agricultural productivity in Mali.
