Growing the next generation of soil health champions at University of Ségou
The University of Ségou has recognized the significant contributions of the project Strengthening Human Capital for Soil Health-Focused Extension in Africa, a component of the Coalition for Strengthening Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services in Africa (C4SEAS) initiative, implemented in partnership with Sasakawa Africa Association. The initiative has helped strengthen the university’s scientific, technical, and pedagogical capacities in soil health and sustainable agriculture.
The University highlights that key activities—such as agricultural systems diagnosis, access to soil data, mapping of management zones, and the development of decision-support tools—have enhanced the skills of researchers and academic staff. These efforts have also improved the institution’s ability to generate and apply evidence-based solutions for agricultural challenges.
A major achievement of the project has been the co-development of six harmonized training modules covering soil health, production systems, agroecology, digital tools, agricultural advisory services, and participatory approaches. The modules are helping to modernize agricultural education by providing students with more practical learning opportunities. According to the University, the project has also stimulated discussions on establishing a Master’s program in Soil Science and Sustainable Agriculture. This reflects the growing need for qualified professionals to support climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural systems in Mali and across Africa.
Beyond strengthening academic capacity, the initiative is helping bridge the gap between research, training, and field-level agricultural development. By preparing future researchers, extension professionals, and agricultural advisors, the project helps build stronger support systems for farmers and sustainable food production.
Overall, the University of Ségou considers the C4SEAS a transformative initiative that has strengthened its position as a regional center of excellence in soil health, sustainable agriculture, and agricultural advisory services. Through this partnership, SAA and the university are helping develop the next generation of professionals needed to advance sustainable agricultural transformation in Africa.
