The Sasakawa Africa Association Announces New Leadership and Honorary Advisors, Marking a Milestone in Advancing Sustainable Agriculture in Africa

The Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) is pleased to announce important leadership transitions and the appointment of Honorary Advisors, further enhancing its strategic direction and partnerships in driving positive change in agricultural development in Africa.

Dr. Amit Roy, a renowned figure in international agricultural development, assumes the role of Chair of the Board, effective July 1, 2023. With over 40 years of expertise in more than 100 countries, Dr. Roy has played a pivotal role in shaping SAA's strategic direction. As the former President and CEO of the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), his leadership has broadened programs to support sustainable agricultural productivity worldwide, particularly in the face of complex challenges such as climate change and soil degradation.

Joining the SAA as Honorary Advisors are two distinguished individuals who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. Hon. Prof. Ruth Oniang'o, a former SAA Board Chair and renowned leader in agricultural research and development, founder of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development, and leader of the Rural Outreach Program, will provide invaluable guidance based on her extensive experience serving on international boards.
Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, brings a wealth of philanthropic initiatives and a deep commitment to agricultural development, exemplified by his instrumental role in establishing the SAA in 1986.

The appointment of Dr. Amit Roy as the Chair, Hon. Professor Ruth Oniang'o, and Mr. Yohei Sasakawa as Honorary Advisors further strengthens SAA's mission to improve the effectiveness of agricultural extension advisory services and support smallholder farmers across Africa.

SAA expresses its gratitude to Hon.Prof. Oniang'o for her exceptional leadership and unweaving dedication she has provided to the organization as and welcomes Dr. Amit Roy as the new Chair. We also acknowledge the continued support of Mr. Yohei Sasakawa and welcomes him to his role as Honorary Advisor. Together, all of us will work collaboratively to drive SAA's strategic direction in building a sustainable and resilient food system in Africa and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
