Promoting Crop Diversification and Improved Agricultural Technologies in Tigray Region, Ethiopia

This evaluation assessed and presented achievements, outcomes, impacts and challenges of a project entitled “Promoting Crop Diversification and Advanced Technologies in Tigray (PCDAT)” which was implemented in some parts of Tigray Region, Ethiopia. PCDAT was a four-year project, July 2011 - July 2015, implemented by the PCDAT project team of Sasakawa Global 2000-Ethiopia based in Mekele in close collaboration with the Tigray Region al Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development (BoARD) with a financial support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under JICA Partnership Program.

Income Generation by FTCs for Sustainable Extension Delivery through Loan Guarantee Fund (LGF) Scheme

Sasakawa Global 2000 (SG 2000) Ethiopia implemented Loan Guarantee Fund (LGF) scheme under the financial support provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The project started in 2011 targeting 154 FTCs in 20 Woredas of nine regions (Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR, Gambela, Benisngul Gumuz, Somali, Harari, Diredewa and Tigray). The objectives of the LGF were (i) to operate as an extension arm of FTCs by establishing successful demonstration of profitable agricultural business enterprises which serve as a learning platform; (ii) to enable FTCs to engage in cost-recovery activities that will move them towards financial sustainability and ultimately ensure their independence from tight government budget.

Strengthening Agricultural Extension Delivery in Ethiopia Project

The project “Strengthening Agricultural Extension Delivery in Ethiopia (SAEDE)”,
funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), was implemented by Sasakawa
Global 2000 Ethiopia (SG2000-Ethiopia) in collaboration with Oxfam America (OA) and Ministry
of Agriculture (MoA). The project covered ten regions and twenty-two Woredas in the country,
aiming to improve food security and income of 215,000 farmers. The main objective of the
project was to improve the skills and ability of DAs and SMS’ to deliver more diverse extension
services to smallholder farmers, with special focus on marginalized groups such as women,
agro-pastoralists, youth and very poor farmers. This evaluation intended to independently and
objectively evaluate the project with respect to its relevance, efficiency, effectiveness and
sustainability.
